Our Almond Milk blog is our most popular blog of all time. I’ve not just made that up to sound fancier than we really are, it’s true, it has had the most views by a LONG way.
I’ve been having a little play around with this recipe, because you all love it so, and my two favourite concoctions have been chocolate and golden milk (recipe coming soon, do not fret)
Our recipe for chocolate almond milk is so great (if I do say so myself) that it can be glugged straight from the bottle, as it is yummy enough to drink solo. Its also super healthy- you know me, I always like to be able to identify EVERY ingredient in anything I ingest.
You can have this hot or cold. I thought I’d prefer it hot, but actually its nicer cold in my opinion.
I would recommend some kind of sweetener for this recipe. If you can eat dairy, a high percentage of the cocoa bean, fairly traded, and low to zero waste packaged chocolate adds a really good depth to the milk.
If you can’t eat dairy (like me, sad times) or you’re a vegan, you can add in dates, agave syrup, maple syrup or a sweetener of your choice.
So this recipe is imagining you have already made your almond milk or you’ve been lucky enough to grab some milk in your own container, with no packaging!

ZERO WASTE CHOCOLATE ALMOND MILK

Yield: 1 litre

1L of almond milk
300g high-quality chocolate (avoid if DF/ Vegan)
3tbs sweeteners such as maple syrup, honey, agave syrup or 3 dried dates
3tbs cocoa powder
Break up the chocolate (if using) and place into the microwavable bowl. Melt the chocolate in the microwave. Be sure to microwave in short bursts (say 10 seconds) to avoid burning.
Add a generous splash of almond milk (about 5tbsp) to the bowl of cholate, and begin to mix everything into a paste. If you didn’t use the chocolate, then add your choice of sweeteners to your splash of milk.
Add your cocoa powder to your milky choco paste, it should be getting a little thicker now.
Place the choco paste into the thermal mixer or saucepan. Begin to heat very gently, stirring continuously for about 5 minutes.
Add the remainder of the almond milk to the mix slowly, being sure to check everything thoroughly mixed together.
Turn off the heat and allow to cool
Taste the milk to check if it is sweet enough for you, and adjust as needed
When fully cool, use the funnel to transfer the milk back into the bottle
