Zero Waste Breakfast Ideas

A few simple switches can make for a completely Zero Waste breakfast, or at least one with dramatically less waste. I found breakfast was by far the easiest meal to make zero waste.

Mine and Anna’s staple go to was porridge, so we simply made these changes:

Buy in bulk, the oats and the toppings came straight from a bulk shop into our containers, Or in Anna’s case, straight from her farm back home into a container for her to bring back.

If you’re not close to a zero waste bulk store, the wonderful Plastic Free Pantry offer home delivery in the UK.

Milk from a milk man, back in the days before I was dairy intolerant (sigh) I used to get my milk delivered from Milk & More. There are plenty of other alternatives out there and I have more recently found a local farmer who supplies milk to the area I live in. It's a huge shame that I can’t support the farm now as milk gives me a tummy ache!

As variety is the spice of life, you may not want to live on porridge forever. Here are other ideas, including condiments and drinks to go with them, to ensure you have a varied breakfast!

Overnight oats - Basically this is porridge with a different name. This is a great option if you are tight on time in the morning.

A Zero Waste Life Overnight Oats

Granola - We make our granola using up whatever is in our cupboard. It is baked in oils and spices and we use fruit pulp too. The fruit pulp we used in this one was from when we made apple juice but I have also used pumpkin pulp and that was DEVINE!

Banana muffins - These freeze super well, so you can just pull one out of the freezer the night before you eat it, or heat it up in the oven, toaster or microwave.

Bread - This is our recipe, but you totally don’t have to make your own to be Zero Waste! In fact, some people would argue it is better to support your local baker as the energy usage may be less as they use specialist equipment for larger batches.

Avocado toast This is a lovely yummy topping for the bread mentioned above! You can add whatever you like to top off your avocado toast.

Nutella - Oh yeah, we love a bit of Nutella. You can make other nut butters by missing off the cocoa powder and sweeteners and changing the nuts you use.

Almond Milk - If you don’t eat dairy, and want to avoid those pesky tetra packs plant milks come in, this one is for you. It’s not as much as a faff as I imagined it would be- it takes a little time, but it is worth it knowing what is in your milk and that there is no waste made after consuming it.

Tea and Coffee- Likewise with the porridge, just changing the way you purchase tea, coffee and milk can significantly reduce the single use throw away items produced. So can changing the way you make your drinks. Try a tea pot or cafetière rather than tea bags and sachets.

Apple juice - You can adjust the sweetness of this one to suit your taste and also add spices if you wish! I always feel like a domestic goddess when I have homemade apple juice in my fridge!
